OTTAWA - Canada imposes sanctions on North Korea for the sinking of a South Korean navel vessel in March.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper says in a statement issued today that the sanctions will include enhanced restrictions on trade, investment and other bilateral relations with North Korea. The government will also suspend high-level visits to Canada by North Korean officials.
the sinking of the Cheonan on March 26 near the Koreas' western maritime boarder killed 46 sailors. Three experts from the Canadian Navy joined the multinational team that investigated the incident, and concluded the warship was sunk by a torpedo.
Harper's statement says, "Canada has condemned the reckless North Korean regime for this egregious violation of international law and its blatant disregard of its international obligations."
He pledged Canada's support of South Korean President Lee Myung-bac's decision to respond decisively to the "act of aggression."
The statement adds that Canada is committed to a co-ordinated international response, including through the United Nations Security Council.

This article is interesting,I definitly agree with making secure measures on the trade and the other relations with Korea, yet i belief that citizens of korea should be granted a few days to visit any relatives in Canada.
It is tragic that the ship was sunk and sailors have died, and this will definitly lead to a trust issue with various countries.
At first what caught my attention about this article is title. I thought that N Korea had caused a Canadian warship to sink. But when I read the article it became obvious that was not the case. A South Korean ship had been sunk by North Korea.
In my opinion Canada reacted to the "act of aggresion" in the right way. The fact that Canada has limited its trade with North Korea shows that we care about what is right and wrong. The incident caused violation of internation laws and Canada is against that.
I think that Stephen Harper's decision to support South Korea shows Canada in a positive way.
Sorry, I forgot to add my name again the civics 10 comment was by me Yashashwinee.
