Thematic Blog - Paragraph 2

The essay I choose for my blog is BlackBerry, Treo, Razr: A Plague on all of you. By: Diane Francis. The thesis of an essay is like the theme of a story. The theme of the essay BlackBerry, Treo, Razr: A Plague on all of you is that technology is taking over our lives. “It is addictive, invasive and anit-social just like all the electronic devices in our lives.” The connection between this essay and the picture by Mark Parisi is that they both show the overuse of technology. The essay refers to a toddler that was “jealous” of his mother’s BlackBerry and attempted to throw it out the window. The picture does not show a jealous child, but one that is using an electronic device to throw a tantrum. Both show the effect of using technology too much has on children. That is not all. The essay states that “The art of eye contact is disappearing.” The picture also shows this. The child in the stroller and both parents have their eyes locked on screens. They are making no eye contact at all, only communicating using the electronic device. BlackBerry, Treo, Razr: A Plague on all of you talks about how “All public spaces have become one gigantic telephone booth and we’re all jammed in it together.” The family in the picture are outside talking a walk or going somewhere and yet they are communicating using the electronic device. Both the essay and the picture show that technology is taking over our world and has become the key means of communication.
