For my thematic Blog I chose the story Sweat and the song Karma. The short story Sweat By Zora Neale Hurston and the song Karma by Alicia Keys are linked thematically. The common theme is: what you give is what you get. Both the story and the song are about women who are first deceived with false love and then neglected and mistreated. In Sweat, Sykes first marries Delia, then begins abusing her, keeps a mistress and also uses up the money that she earns. Karma is about a man that tells the women who loves him that he doesn’t love her anymore and that he wants her gone. Both women suffer emotional pain, and Delia also goes through physical pain. In the end Karma gets both men and they get what they deserve. The same snake that Sykes used to terrorize Delia ended up killing him. The hospital was too far away, and after the pain he caused her, Delia didn’t even try to help Sykes. In the song Karma the man wants her back but after being treated so badly, she isn’t willing to accept anything he says. Both the short story Sweat and the song Karma by Alicia Keys are examples of the saying ‘what goes around comes around’. I believe that you should never think or act badly to anyone because in one way or another it will come back to you.

Karma--from the root kri, "to do"--is the means by which you become the architect of your own destiny. The word karma literally means deed, but implies the entire cycle of cause and its effects. According to the law of karma, every human action--in thought, word, or deed-- inevitably leads to results or consequences, positive or negative, depending upon the quality of the action.
